Busy Philipps Shares the Workout Behind Her "Sexy Mom Era"

Busy Philipps thinks we could all stand to be a little more honest in our workout classes. Admittedly, it doesn't take a ton of convincing to get Philipps to share her unfiltered thoughts — but in agreeing to wear a hot mic during a Zumba class, she might've unlocked some of her most candid takes yet. "My hips have not seen this much action in a while," she says mid-class in a video shared on Oct. 6. "I look like I'm in a high school theater production."

This venture into unfamiliar terrain is just one of the ways Philipps is stepping into her "sexy mom era" — a phase of life all about feeling confident and exploring what brings you joy. Although she's previously experienced symptoms of star student syndrome — trying to be the best in class or working to impress the fitness instructor — these days, she works out with herself in mind. "The more empowered you are in yourself and what's true to you, the sexier it is to other people," she says. "That's the thing that people respond to with me. They respond to the fact that I'm a little bit DGAF."

"Are people going to judge me? What if I need more water than some? What if I pee?"

Unfamiliar workout classes can definitely be intimidating, but as long as she's being honest, this is some of the most fun Philipps has had in a fitness setting. "I have been looking for a new cardio workout that I don't hate," she tells Popsugar. "I think it's a very relatable experience, right? You're trying a new thing for the first time, you're going by yourself, you're like, 'Oh God, am I wearing the right stuff? Are people going to judge me? What if I need more water than some? What if I pee?'"

That said, the fitness world and "sexy mom era" can be difficult to embrace, especially when you're faced with the pressure to make it all look picture-perfect. Philipps's advice? "You have to let go of other people's expectations and feeling beholden to other people's ideas of what you should be doing," she says. "Get in touch with what you want to do." She's doing her part by going on trips, re-uniting with old friends, and yes, trying new workouts that feel fun, not frustrating.
