Your ‘Healthy’ Soda May Be Silently Screwing Over Your Liver

Nowadays, we're long past having to make a decision between just Coke or Pepsi. You've got a lot of options if you're bored of water—from fizzy non-alcoholic drinks to flavored seltzers. But while a lot of these drinks market themselves as healthy alternatives to sodas, new research suggest they could be silently doing a number on your liver health.

That’s the major takeaway from a study that links pretty much all types of drinks that aren't water to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). You might know it by its former name, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). But whatever you call it, it's no joke.

MASLD happens when too much fat builds up in your liver from inputs other than alcohol. It can lead to serious liver scarring or end-stage liver disease. It can also put you at high-risk for heart disease and diabetes. According to the American College of Gastroenterology, heart disease is the number one killer of people living with MASLD.
