Hypertension

3 ways to satisfy pregnancy cravings

… the healthy way

Pregnancy cravings are all part of the pregnancy package. Right along with your glowing skin, healthy, shiny hair and swelling bump, you can expect some weird and unhealthy cravings. Let’s find healthier ways to satisfy those longings.

Want: cheese

Choose: low-fat or fat-free frozen yoghurt

Cheese is kilojoule-dense and high in saturated fats. Ice-cream is also high in kilojoules, saturated fat and sugar. Go for low-fat or fat-free milk (with a pinch of cocoa powder for a sweet fix), or yoghurt, or even frozen yoghurt, which are lower in kilojoules and still good sources of calcium. Calcium is vital in pregnancy, so indulge this craving – healthily.

Want: salty chips

Choose: oven-baked fries

Chips are typically high in salt, and everyone, especially pregnant women, should restrict their dietary salt intake to no more than one teaspoon per day, due to the risk of hypertension. Salt easily sneaks into the diet. Chips are also high in fat as they are deep-fried. Opt for a healthier option, which is lower in kilojoules, such as homemade oven chips, and use herbs and spices, without the salt.

Want: chocolate

Choose: dark chocolate

Your pregnancy can be tiring and with hormonal changes, you might feel you’re on an emotional rollercoaster. Often, we turn to sweets and chocolates for a quick pick-me-up. Dark chocolate is a great substitute; it’s richer so satisfies your sweet tooth quicker, and generally contains less sugar than normal milk chocolate.
