Treating worms in kids

Worms are a type of parasite and there are different types of intestinal worms, but the most common is threadworm (also called pinworm). Threadworm is a type of roundworm, commonly found in preschool and school-aged children.

These tiny worms spread easily and can be found in your child’s poo. You can identify them by looking out for something that resembles pieces of white thread.

What causes threadworms?
Threadworm eggs get inside the body through the mouth after you touch something that's contaminated with worm eggs. After getting in your mouth, the eggs pass through the digestive system.

Signs and symptoms of threadworm
Threadworm causes a very itchy bottom. They are usually not serious and can be treated easily with medication.

If your child has threadworm, they may:
• Have an itchy bottom, which may become red and inflamed from scratching and usually worsen at night.
• Be irritable.
• Not sleep very well.
• Have a reduced appetite.

How do threadworms spread?
Threadworms spread when their eggs are swallowed. They lay eggs around your bottom (anus), which makes it itchy. The eggs get stuck on your fingers when you scratch. They can then pass on to anything you touch, like:

• Clothes.
• Toys.
• Toothbrushes.
• Kitchen or bathroom surfaces.
• Bedding.
• Food.
• Pets.

Children can get threadworms again after they've been treated if they get the eggs in their mouth. So, it's important to encourage children to wash their hands regularly.

When to see a doctor
If over-the-counter treatments aren't working, see a doctor so they can get their poo and blood examined. You may also take them to the doctor if:

• They pass a large worm.
• They have abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or low energy levels.

Keep the worms away!
Practise good hand hygiene in your home. Ensure your kids wash their hands with soap before they eat, after they play outside, and after they use the toilet. Keep your child’s fingernails clean and trimmed and try to stop them from biting their nails or sucking their thumb.

Remember, pinworm eggs can hang around in clothes, so be sure to change your child’s underwear every day and always put on a clean pair.
have the financial means to do so or have a family member assist while you’re finding your groove.

Remember, everyone needs help from time to time, that takes nothing away from your success as a parent.

Schedule me-time
Make it a goal to schedule some time for yourself every day. You get to use this time however you wish. Prioritise this, and you’ll all be happier and feel much less stress.

Self-care
Self-care is essential for good parenting. If you’re tired, stressed, or depressed, you'll be unable to interact with your children the way a well-rested parent should.

Occasional pampering can make the world of a difference in your energy and confidence. Find time to get a massage, have your nails and feet done, get a head massage, run yourself a candlelit bath while listening to music or reading a book.

Takeaway
The little joys you once enjoyed don’t have to be a thing of the past. It’s all about balance, and seeking help when you need it.
