Backache

Dealing with back pain

Has your back been killing you? Here are some reasons why
Back pain is normal when it comes to being a mum. Here are ways to strengthen your back and ease the pain.

Backache goes hand-in-hand with pregnancy and motherhood because of the extra pregnancy weight and work you do every day as a mum.

Every mum experiences it at some point - even a star like the former Miss World, Rolene Strauss has complained about back pain! This is because you’re constantly bending down to pick up your little one or carrying a lot of extra weight in your tummy whilst you are pregnant. This pregnancy weight puts strain on your back muscles and it doesn’t let up once your baby is born.

Not dealing with these back pains will only allow them to get worse. Here are a few simple ways of strengthening your back:

1. The biggest help comes from losing weight, as difficult as it is!
2. Try to walk or climb stairs rather than drive or take an elevator.
3. Bend your knees when picking up your baby or something heavy.
4. Ask your partner, friend or family to massage your back.
5. Place a warm towel over your lower back at the end of a long day.

If you experience sharp pins and needles spreading down your leg, visit your local clinic for medicines that will help reduce the swelling around the nerves. If it still doesn’t ease up, you might need an X-ray.
