Just for Mums

Tips for new parents

Help at hand
A new baby at home is exciting, but can also be tiring, frustrating, and confusing all at once! All parents need a little help now and then. Here are a few tips to help you hold on to your sanity.

Sleep well
• Keep natural remedies on hand to deal with headaches brought on from lack of sleep. Try not to take headache tablets every day.
• Keep nappies, bum cream, wet wipes/cotton wool, water, baby-grows and all other essentials near you for night waking, so that you do not have to turn the lights on and can get back to sleep before you are too fully awake.
• Keep the light low and don’t talk to anything or anyone when you get up to check on your little one, only one person needs to be awake at a time.
• Cat napping when you have a chance are a great way to catch some extra z’s.
• Alternate duties on a Saturday with your partner so you can take turns sleeping in. It will help you both deal with sleepless nights.
• A big meal before bedtime can cause indigestion and lead to you tossing and turning all night. Give yourself enough time to digest your meal before heading off to bed.

Healthy you
• Try this visualisation trick to manage stress. The next time you feel tense or anxious, picture yourself standing in a warm drizzle of rain, and imagine it washing away your stress.
• Comparing your life to others means losing valuable energy that could go into getting your own life to where you want it to be. Think about what you love about your own life and how to create more things in your life that you love!
• Devise an affirmation — a short, clear, positive statement that focuses on your coping abilities. Affirmations are a good way to silence the self-critical voice we all carry with us that only adds to our stress.
• Don’t let problems between you and your partner fester and end up exploding. Talk it out, even the small issues before they become big issues.
