5 quick and healthy snack swaps

Eat this, not that
To help you achieve your best body yet without having to completely sacrifice your guilty pleasures, there's a better way of eating your favourite foods.

Many snacks have loads of calories which may lead to unintentional weight gain. Implementing food swaps isn’t to deprive you of all the joy your snacks bring, but a way to aid your health and help maintain good weight.

Try these healthy swaps.

Fries
Swap with: sweet potatoes
Sweet potatoes are an ideal option if you’re watching your weight. While potatoes are high on the glycaemic index, which can lead to energy spikes, slumps and cravings, sweet potatoes are a complex carbohydrate with a much lower GI ranking. They're packed with minerals and vitamins including antioxidant beta-carotene. You can enjoy sweet potatoes by baking them into chips or wedges.

Snack bars
Swap with: fruit
Many swear by cereal/snack bars as an in-between-meals snack. But many of these bars are chock-full of cane sugar, corn syrup and saturated fat. If you're craving a sweet snack between your meals, opt for a piece of fruit instead and save yourself from unwanted calories.

Fried eggs
Swap with: boiled or poached
Make your breakfast healthier by ditching butter or oils. Stick to poaching or boiling your eggs. If possible, you may dry-fry your eggs instead (if you have a good quality non-stick pan).

Chips
Swap with: popcorn
Popcorn is a wholegrain and lower in fat than chips. Avoid extras toppings and seasonings like huge doses of salt or sugar. These additions can hinder your health journey.

Soda
Swap with: Kombucha
Sugar-laden drinks can have a severe impact on your overall health. If fizziness is what you need, Kombucha tea is the answer to your cravings. This fermented beverage has several health benefits like immune-boosting probiotics and antioxidants which benefit your brain, heart, and gut. Make sure it's an unpasteurised kind, as pasteurisation kills off both harmful and helpful bacteria, which means any potential beneficial probiotics would be gone as well.
