Testosterone therapy

Is it right for you?
Testosterone is a hormone produced primarily in the testicles that helps maintain your bone density, fat distribution, muscle strength, facial and body hair, blood cell production, sex drive and sperm production.

Testosterone levels generally peak during adolescence and early adulthood. As you age, the production will gradually decline after age 30, but mostly after 40 at about one percent each year.

With low-T levels, you may experience low sex drive and energy, mood changes and erectile dysfunction.

The good news is that you may be able to get your groove back with Testosterone Replacement Therapy, in the form of injections, pellets, patches, or gels.

How can testosterone therapy help you?
Testosterone therapy can help reverse the effects of hypogonadism (when your sex glands produce little or no sex hormones).

Although some men believe they feel younger if they take testosterone medications, there's little evidence to support the use of testosterone in healthy men. While the therapy might improve sexual function in some men, again, there's little evidence that it improves wellness and energy.

Risks of testosterone therapy for normal ageing:
• Worsened sleep apnoea.
• Acne or other skin conditions.
• Stimulating noncancerous growth of the prostate and growth of existing prostate cancer.
• Enlarged breasts.
• Limited sperm production or cause testicles to shrink.

When there's an increase in red blood stimulation, you run the risk of developing a blood clot. A clot could break loose, travel through your bloodstream and lodge in your lungs and block blood flow (pulmonary embolism).

Be realistic
Low-T itself doesn't need treatment. Only men with symptoms of low testosterone and blood levels that confirm this as the cause of symptoms should consider testosterone replacement.

Testosterone replacement therapy can have side-effects, and the long-term risks and benefits aren't fully known. There's no proof that it will restore your fountain of youth, make you live longer, prevent diseases, improve memory or mental sharpness.

If the symptoms of low-T get in the way of fully living your life, speak to your doctor about Testosterone Replacement Therapy. Understand the potential risks and consider the alternatives before boosting your hormones indefinitely.
